AsphaltEdge Product Applications
Restraining Pavers and Setting Course over Concrete Base

AsphaltEdge Restraint Goal
To securely retain the paver and setting course while providing a long-term, visually aesthetic and easily maintainable edge.

*Application Overview

  • Place the sidewall of the AsphaltEdge _” in from the edge of concrete base.
  • Anchor into the outer 1” of the AsphaltEdge base or a minimum of 2” from the edge of the concrete using a Hilti or Ramset fastening system (see anchoring below).
  • The setting course is spread over the concrete base and serves as a leveling course filling in the unlevel portions of the concrete base.
  • Pavers are laid on setting course with a thin layer of fines then spread over the paver surface.
  • The entire installation is then vibra-pacted into place.
  • Semi-compact backfill material adjacent to the completed paver installation providing additional support.

*Intended as an overview only, please refer to specifier/ manufacturer technical specifications.

Application Note:
We recommend AsphaltEdge for this paver application. AsphaltEdge’s wider base (2-1/4” or 3” depending on AE product) offers a wider surface to mechanically anchor the restraint down to the concrete. The mechanical vibration process will set the pavers into the setting course by _” approximately and can be figured into the side-wall coverage.
The narrower SE base can result in the concrete breaking out during mechanical anchoring.

Anchoring

  • Place the sidewall of the AsphaltEdge _” in from the edge of concrete base.
  • Anchor into the outer 1” of the AsphaltEdge base or a minimum of 2” from the edge of the concrete.
  • Anchor at ends of each section in addition to guidelines indicated below.
  • Anchor using a Hilti DX A41 Powder Actuated Fastening System is desirable where sufficient hold can be obtained. _” to 1 nail (12” on center) with appropriate charge is recommended. Contact Hilti customer service 800.879.8000 for details.

AsphaltEdge Product:
Typically AsphaltEdge 2 _”
As a rule, it is desirable to cover a minimum of 1/3 to _ the paver height.
(Typical paver - 6cm = 2-3/8” / less common 10cm paver = 4”)
Formula – 1/3 to _ paver height + setting course depth (minus _” for compaction) = minimum restraint height.

Variables

  • Height of the paver - Typical paver - 6cm = 2-3/8” / less common 10cm paver = 4”
  • The depth of the setting course – typically 1” but can vary
  • The amount of paver (side wall) coverage desired by specifier or installer.
  • Amount of setting course compaction – typically _”
